What exactly is SEO and is it important for small business owners to understand?

Understanding the importance of SEO for small business can be one of the best business decisions you can make.



Whether your business is big or small, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your small business website through organic search engine results. For those of you who might be wondering, in this case “organic” means unpaid. As in free.

When you understand how much in dollar revenue your business brings in through SEO, you will quickly understand how important it is. If you bring in a decent amount (just by generated targeted, keyword rich blog / website content that your customer base engages with), you understand how powerful and important a well written post can be. If you don’t bring any money in through SEO (customers referred through google / internet, etc), then you probably don’t even know what your small business is missing!Today’s question is to ask yourself if your business is using good SEO practices. The answer will be in your results.

When searching for any specific keyword related to your business, you should appear near the top of the organic listings on the first page (under the ads).Why is this important? Because people trust organic content more than they do google ads. Not only that, but organic search represents 94.95% of all search traffic, or 35.21% of total traffic.

Why is SEO a better investment than Google Ads?

Google ads only work when your ads are on and you are paying for each and every click. When your ad spend is gone, the clicks stop. It’s like your car just ran out of gas. Large and small businesses pay for good SEO content up front (when the posts are written, for example), and it generates traffic over time, building more and more as awareness is gained. Many of you have heard me say this before. Good marketing (whether digital or other) is about having the right message in front of the right person at the right time. Strong keyword blogging allows you to do that! If you have the right content on the page, filled with the best keywords, the right offer and it is written the way people need content to be online, voila! You have the right message (what they searched for) in front of the right person (the person who is currently looking for that very thing) at the right time (when they need it). Of course you should. I often ask my clients how much revenue they generate per hour when they are running their business (i.e. practicing their craft, selling to a customer, or “doing their thing”). The number varies, but it can be anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars an hour. I then ask them how much its COSTS them every hour they spend doing something they aren’t a pro at, vs what brings revenue in.
